vs Crawl4AI

Last reviewed 2026-10-04. Crawl4AI is Apache-2.0 and moves fast — check github.com/unclecode/crawl4ai for current features.

Crawl4AI is a Python library for LLM-friendly crawling — deep extraction strategies, a big community (~80k★). webx is a self-contained toolkit and server: a CLI, a long-running HTTP API with jobs/tenancy/metering, an MCP server, and a private index — in one static Go binary with no Python runtime to manage.

webx Crawl4AI
Form Binary CLI + HTTP server + MCP + SDKs Python library (+ optional Docker server)
Runtime Single static binary Python env, Playwright browsers, system deps
Search Built-in 15-provider metasearch Not a search engine — BYO discovery
Index SQLite FTS5 + embeddings, offline query External vector DB typically
Jobs/tenancy Durable jobs (SQLite/Postgres SKIP LOCKED), API keys, per-key quotas, audit, webhooks DIY around the library
Change detection diff/watch + conditional GET + --exec hooks DIY
Rendering Chrome via go-rod / Lightpanda / remote CDP Playwright
License MIT Apache-2.0
  • Inside a Python pipeline. If your stack is already Python (pandas, DSPy, LangChain), importing a library beats shelling to a binary.
  • Extraction strategy zoo. Many chunking/extraction strategies and community-contributed configs for weird page shapes.
  • Community mass. ~80k stars means answered questions and blog coverage.
  • Ops. curl -LO webx && ./webx serve vs venv + pip + playwright install + browser deps. On a fresh VPS the difference is minutes vs a Dockerfile.
  • It’s a server, not just a library. Async jobs with SSE progress, per-tenant API keys with rpm/monthly_units quotas, signed webhooks, cron schedules, idempotency keys — the API surface a team needs, built in.
  • Search + corpus. Metasearch and the local index mean webx answers “find → read → store → query” end-to-end; crawl4ai covers the middle.
  • Agent harness fit. webx mcp (17 tools) and webx skill target Claude-Code-style harnesses directly; --fit and est_tokens manage context budgets.
  • Footprint. Go static binary + SQLite vs Python + Playwright + Chromium — matters in sandboxes, CI, edge boxes, and customer embeds.
  • Pick Crawl4AI if you’re writing a Python data pipeline and want crawl-as-code with mature extraction strategies.
  • Pick webx if you want a service — multi-tenant API, jobs, schedules, monitoring, MCP — or anything outside Python-land.

They compose fine: crawl4ai for in-pipeline crawling, webx serve as the shared scrape/search/extract endpoint for everything else. webx SDKs are zero-dependency (pip install webx-sdk), so a Python pipeline can drive a webx server with one import.
